David Yurkew opened a tattoo studio in Minneapolis in 1976.
After holding the first official tattoo convention from the 24th to the 26th of January 1976, some of the tattoo artists joined the North American Tattoo Club in Houston, and chose Yurkew as their first president. He went on to host another 6 consecutive World Tattoo Conventions through 1982. In 1996 the convention for the 20th anniversary together with Lyle Tuttle in Houston.
